The Province of British Columbia, Western States and other senior government jurisdictions are introducing Green Energy Plans, Carbon Taxation Cap and Trade Schemes and other Green theme gas reduction strategies.

The City of North Vancouver has been developing a variety of energy conserving planning and operational practises since 1980. Most notably is 2004, the City's Lonsdale Energy Corporation (LEC) was established with a vision of providing district heat, domestic hot water, and eventually, district energy cooling systems in the City on the north shore of the Burrard Inlet, a short SeaBus ride from Vancouver's downtown metropolitan core.

LEC has grown dramatically and now serves over 1,000 end users, commercial businesses, institutions and residences in Lower and Central Lonsdale. An additional 1,000 will be hooked up in the next two years. LEC was established with support from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Government of Canada, LEC is now introducing solar panel based heating in the new Central Lonsdale community system as it explores geothermal and ocean source heating and cooling options as well.

Interest in the success of LEC has grown as rapidly as its service area. The September 19, 2008 workshop sponsored by the City of North Vancouver, Lonsdale Energy Corporation, Bull Housser & Tupper, Stantec and BC Hydro, will provide the first opportunity for other government agencies, energy suppliers, consultants and interested members of the public to discover how LEC was conceived, how it was developed as a community energy utility, and how it is now operating and expanding.

Presentations, workshops and panel discussions will be used to describe how this award winning corporation was brought into being and how it plans to diversify and expand. The workshop includes a tour of LEC locations to view the technology in operation.

An opening night reception in the City of North Vancouver's new Library which is serviced by LEC, is also planned on September 18, 2008.
